12 Things to Leave Behind Before Your Next Move

When you make that big move, it’s important to leave behind the things that are holding you back. Moving is a big task to take on but it can be minimized by omitting the right things. You want to walk into your new home with a fresh start, so here are 12 items that should stay behind when you take off for your new place.

1. Unnecessary Furniture

Moving heavy furniture can be a hassle and it may not even fit in your new space. Consider donating or selling any items that won’t come with you. This means anything bulky, like a large couch or heavy dresser.

2. Clutter

Before you move, take the opportunity to declutter. Get rid of anything you don’t need such as old magazines, clothes you haven’t worn in years or extra kitchen gadgets. You don’t want to pay more money than necessary for moving it, so take the time to dispose of things you don’t need.

3. Old Clothing

Clear out your closet of any clothes that no longer fit, or you haven’t worn in a while. Donate them to those in need or to a local thrift store. This is your chance to start fresh with a more minimal wardrobe.

4. Old Electronics

If you have outdated electronics or devices taking up space, see if a donation organization will take them off your hands. Whether it’s an old laptop or a TV, you don’t want to be lugging them around on moving day.

5. Unused Appliances

If you have appliances that are taking up space and not being used, donate them or sell them to someone who needs it more than you. Rusted pans or old utensils could be good to get rid of.

6. Expired Food

Go through your pantry and refrigerator to throw out any expired food before packing it away. It may be gross but you don’t want to move food that has gone bad.

7. Old Decor

Take the time to rethink and downsize any décor that’s been in your home for a while. It will make packing easier and freshen up your new space.

8. Outdated Books and Magazine

Donate or sell any books or magazines you aren’t likely to read again. While hanging onto books may seem like a good idea, it’ll cost you more money to move them.

9. Unmaintained Items

If you have any items that are broken or need repair, consider getting rid of them to save room and hassle.

10. Excess Cleaning Supplies

Make sure to go through all your cleaning supplies before packing them away. Get rid of anything you don’t use.

11. Extra Plastic Bags

Do your part for the environment and get rid of any excess plastic bags you have lying around before moving out.

12. Bad Memories

Finally, it’s important to leave any negative memories or feelings behind when you go. Moving is a chance to start fresh; let go of anything that might be holding you back.  Make sure you leave your old space with a positive attitude.

Good luck!  With these items left behind, your next move should be smooth sailing.
