Understanding the Risk of an STI in Intimate Relationships
For sexually active people, it is important to know and understand one’s risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). In the United States, 20% of people currently deal with an STI in their everyday lives. Although abstinence is the only true way to avoid these diseases, there are several factors to be aware of that can greatly increase or decrease one’s chances of contracting one.
Where one lives can change their risk level, as different parts of the United States are more susceptible to STIs than others. Additionally, our lifestyle choices can make an impact as well. Choosing to have multiple partners, having unprotected sex, using dating apps, abusing substances, and using inadequate contraceptive methods are all ways to increase that risk. These practices do not guarantee that one will contract an STI, but they involve a great deal of unknown and risk that could result in contraction. Background and sexuality are important to consider as well, with gender, ethnicity, partners, age, income, and education level all having an impact.
Whether one is planning on becoming sexually active or already is, the best time to start practicing safe sex is now. This ensures the safety of ourselves and others and keeps us healthy in our relationships.
